Onomastics - Pub Names

Boswell’s famous quote of Samuel Johnson appears in many a pub; ‘....No, Sir; there is nothing which has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or inn.’ There are many aspects of a traditional British pub that are envied worldwide; one of those is the naming of pubs. Aside from the often crass naming of new or refurbished pubs by the mega corporations such as the unappealing "Dino's", "Chino's", "Lulu's" and the growing "Oz" bar themes, many of the names of our pubs have their origins in the ancient landscape, poke slight fun at the ruling families, a way to celebrate great men and their achievements or have become something very different from their original roots by linguistic modification over the centuries.
